Fist of Awesome is coming to platforms soon. It’s a game, that can be gracefully described by Sword and Sworcery aesthetics (and Lumberjacks!) meets Double Dragon gameplay. This game was previously backed by Kickstarter is should be released for iOS, Android, OUYA this spring and Mac/PC later this year. This game was made by I fight bears.
Look out for Retro City Rampage. A game, that seemed to be in development for over ten years and that now is available for almost every indie-platform available. It’s a game, that uses the very first GTA game mechanic and oldschool charming NES look – and full of small jokes. Indeed, there is an intimate relationship between the NES and the creator of this game. Read the whole story (and a video) at 4 Color Rebellion.
One of Cologne’s Global Game Jam 2013 entries freshly hit the iPhone AppStore. It’s a tiny game, called “Super Sloth Jazz Jam“. It has got a nice little idea around the Game Jam 2013 topic “HeartBeat”. You direct a small jazz-band with fast and slow passages, by pressing the heart in time. You have to be more or less accurate, otherwise your performance will fail. A nice game, made in just 48 hours of the game jam, playing with the idea around a musical-performance-directing-game. Graphics and music is sweet as well! Super Sloth Jazz Jam is available for free in the end, so why not give it a try. (via Krystman #onegameamonth)
Oh, before you leave… I also made a game at the game jam! Or let’s say, I finished a prototype of a sound-only game-mechanic. Read more about my “Puzzle BeatBeat” at Nodepond.
Today I had some fun with this little game. It is “Global Game Jam Simulator”. A kind of text-adventure, where you play the organizer of a Global Game Jam venue. Your mission is to set up the event, get it under to people and in the end… “make your jam the biggest in the world to win!”. A pretty self-referential game, huh? You should checkout the small game Skrillex Quest. It’s a creative game, in a Zelda meets 3D meets some interesting twists, made by Jason Oda for the DubStep musician Skrillex. In the game you have to fight glitches, that came into a cartridge by a particle of dust. The game is not a masterpiece, but has some really interesting ideas in it.
Fuck this Jam is the name of a game-jam, where the topic is about making games about a genre you hate. This is meant as a good design practice, to learn and build upon. The submissions for this game-jam were partly great.
I want to highlight the work from the Monochrom-art-collective from Vienna. They made a version of an ego-shooter, called Portraying The Terran Condition: An Approach To Simulate A Civilization. The game is about a “simulation of the humans on earth” for an alien race in a distant future. The game tries to emulate “human life” – but the scientists made many wrong assumption about how human life really was. It begins at the abstract looking landscapes. The game-designers about the game:
“This 7D (backwards compatible to 2D) world simulation depicts six different key events in the history of Terra (‘Earth’), a low-tech civilization that self-destructed several aeons ago. Based on the relatively few biological and cultural artifacts, a team of multi-AI minds was able to recreate a stunningly accurate depiction of this ancient civilization.”
This game is surprisingly well made, full off tension and crude humor. Indeed also the sound design is really great. There is so much words now, but nothing can replace playing the game itself.

A neat small browser-game for people who are into, zelda-clones and nice pixellated graphics. This game called Reaching Finality was made by Cory Martin in two weeks for the Stencyl Jam 2012 competition on Newgrounds.
The game itself doesn’t add anything innovative, but there is something really well balanced, that makes this game fun to play. It’s the dose of the enemies, the music and sound effects – even the used colors of the pixel art. A great game to fiddle away 30 minutes of time!
