Special Problems produced this video for the Song “Mmmhmm” from Flying Lotus. It is a pure pleasure to watch into this visual richness. There is also some “fake game” content included. From time to time I have to think on outstanding Björk videos, when it comes to style. But somehow it is different, because it less about concept and more about eyecandy, that simply wishes the visual brain cells a veeeeery good day. (via)

Google want to engage non-professional users to build own Android-Apps with their newest tool “App Inventor“. With a simple drag and drop interface people can build applications, somehow in realtime using building-blocks. According to Create or die this tool was tested on schoolkids and nurse trainees during development, who were able to successfully build simple, functional applications. In fact, development freedom will be limited, but famous “my cat and I apps” should now flood the Android-world in no time.

rrootage-01rrootage-02

The popular open-source shooter “rRootage” from Kenta Cho was ported to iPhone / iPod Touch already in 2008 by Lazrhog (but seems to be unavailable again). Today a new version of this game was released by another developer: Fraglab. The recent version is fully iOS4 compatible and takes full advantage of the simple multitouch-controls to steer the ship, got music, sound effects, online scoreboards and adds various new gameplay-modes. Get the free game here. (via)

This port of rRootage is once again a double-plus, because there still is really a lack of decent 2d-shooters on the iPhone (big hint to all developers!).

8-bit-city-amsterdam

Retro-nostalgic, mixed up with Open Street Maps result in this alternative city maps of different metropoles: The 8-bit city project delivers maps from cities like New York, Paris, Berlin, London or Amsterdam. The maps are really generated from data of the Open Street Map project and a bunch of open source tools and custom code – transformed into really oldschool-looking tilemaps. You can even make street-searches on the maps!

The project was initiated by Brett Camper, a look in his portfolio is worth it. Interesting projects ahead.

A neat feature about mostly the glitch-works from Paul B. Davis and how it is, to work with technology “as an artistic material”. There is also a text-version of this interview at Creators Project.

streetsupermario

An extensive work of hybrid street-art: imagine a complete Super Mario Level from the NES, drawn 1 to 1 an a sidewalk. Notice the funky detail with the underground-part of the level, made it on the floor. Unfortunately this piece is just a video montage, made by Surfap, a young university graduate currently living in Han(n)over (via

He seems to be somehow obsessed with vintage gaming and floors, because there is another video at Surfap’s YouTube account, including Zelda (NES), floors and strange (German) explanation upon the game.

Scene from Gobber Assault

The Boing Boing competitions “Games inspired by music” closed and it holds some really nice results, worth to check out and vote for. Not only are the games inspired by music, but also by other factors: some contributions are realized in HTML5 and Innovation on general seemed to be some sore of driving force. I like for example the use of the keyboard-mapping at the tank-shooter Infiltration. Anyway, checking out this game is worth the time, especially if you are interested in inspiration, than long-lasting gameplay.
